If you’re thinking on doing your own repairs, think again, as iFixit rates Surface Pro 1 out of 10 for how easy it is to repair. The masters of teardown advice that upgrading the SSD is almost impossible, due to the risk of breaking the cables that surround the device. However, Microsoft didn’t glue or solder the battery, so the good thing here is that if you’re not scared about voiding the warranty and you feel that you have what it takes, you can open the Surface and swap the battery.
Comparing to the previous Surface RT teardown there isn’t much to look here (though the RT had a better score on how easy it is to repair). But you’ll see the addition of two fans and exhaust vents around the tablet that helps to keep the Intel Core i5 CPU in the cool side. Bottom line is that if you get a Surface Pro just take well care of, the glue, screws, and cabling makes it nearly impossible to perform any kind of repairs.
