While the software giant was rumored to be working on this new sort of continue feature since last year, it wasn’t until its Build developer conference that the company began sharing publicly details about Project Rome to allow Windows 10 Universal apps to connect to other devices using Bluetooth and other mediums, such as the cloud, to offer a continue experience, which means that devices don’t necessarily need to be in the same place or network to work with the new feature. Although, we’re still in the early days, we know that the Redmond company is currently using Xbox SmartGlass technology to connect devices to enable the new experience. Through the new continue experience, Universal Windows Platform apps will be capable to sync information across devices and platforms using the cloud, very similar to the way Cortana works today. For example, the feature would allow you to start typing an email on your phone and then finish it on your desktop. Or when you’re reading an article on Microsoft Edge on your PC, you can then finish reading the same article on your phone. If you’re part of the Windows Insider Program, you can see evidence of Project Rome starting with Windows 10 build 14328. Going to Settings > Privacy > General, you can spot a new option that reads: “Let apps on your other devices launch apps and continue experiences on this device over Bluetooth. Change this setting will apply to everyone that uses this device.” However, the feature is not fully implemented in the operating system. Microsoft has been proactively rolling out new previews of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update pretty much every two weeks with new features and changes, this means that in a near future, testers may be able to try the new feature. Of course, the software giant won’t be limiting the Handoff-like feature found in OS X to Windows.
