Even though this is good information every user should know, I don’t know any reason for anyone to wait until after October 18th, 2015, to install a free update. Windows 8.1 is a new update that is set to address many of Windows 8 shortcomings, it brings code stability, enhancements, and a bunch of new features to make your PC more you with new personalization settings. The update (a.k.a Blue) also brings new apps and better integration with cloud services such as SkyDrive, search has improved with Bing, new Windows Store, and a lot more. Just as side note, Windows 8 mainstream support ends January 9th, 2018, and the extended support expires February 10th, 2023.
