According to a new report from Windows Central, sources familiar to Xbox Maverick project say that the new console will carry the “Xbox One S All-Digital Edition” name, and it’s expected to release sometime in May 2019 with preorders starting as early as middle of April. In addition, it appears that the All-Digital Edition version of the console will be available immediately in all supported markets, the report says. If everything goes according to plan, this will be the first console from Microsoft using only downloadable games from the Store, and without a disc drive. Using this new approach should help to make the console lighter and less expensive, and it should help the company keep pushing its subscription services, such as Xbox Game Pass and the upcoming game streaming service known as Project xCloud. However, it’ll also mean no more Blu-Ray playback for many users.
